The Journey of Hope…Continued

I want to thank the outpouring of support everyone has shown me after my first column appeared in The Sentinel last Sunday.  It’s just another step in the Journey of Hope for me, and what a journey it is!

Have a blessed weekend!

Get Action!

For the past few weeks, I have been captivated by the PBS Roosevelt series.  The quote below by particularly spurred my interest because it seems like a recipe for success, and the Roosevelts certainly embody many!

Get action. Do things. Be sane. Don't fritter away your time; create, act, take a place wherever you are and be somebody...”
Theodore Roosevelt

Something to think about as we go into the weekend!

I saw this video and was truly amazed.  It once again shows how determination can move the highest mountain and prove that individuals can do anything if they set their minds to achieve their goal.  I hope you enjoy the clip as much as I did!

September

As you all may already know, I love the month of September.  The crispness of the air revives my spirit somehow.  So, this week, I chose to share one of my poems with you.  I hope you enjoy it and the weather!

September, 1918
By Amy Lowell
This afternoon was the colour of water falling through sunlight;
The trees glittered with the tumbling of leaves;
The sidewalks shone like alleys of dropped maple leaves,
And the houses ran along them laughing out of square, open windows.
Under a tree in the park,
Two little boys, lying flat on their faces,
Were carefully gathering red berries
To put in a pasteboard box.
Some day there will be no war,
Then I shall take out this afternoon
And turn it in my fingers,
And remark the sweet taste of it upon my palate,
And note the crisp variety of its flights of leaves.
To-day I can only gather it
And put it into my lunch-box,
For I have time for nothing
But the endeavour to balance myself
Upon a broken world.

Anne of Green Gables

Here’s a quote from one of my favorite books, Anne of Green Gables.  It certainly encapsulates a firm belief of mine.  There’s always scope for the imagination, that’s for sure!

“Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive—it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there? But am I talking too much? People are always telling me I do. Would you rather I didn't talk? If you say so I'll stop. I can stop when I make up my mind to it, although it's difficult.”

Summer's End

I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful summer day.  The sun glimmering through the trees today reminds me about His promise to all of us.

Happy end of summer!

Continuing Happiness

“Happiness is not determined by what’s happening around you, but rather what’s happening inside you.  Most people depend on others to gain happiness, but the truth is, it always comes from within.”

I’ve seen this quote many times, but it never quite sunk it.  My journey this summer proves this.  There are many twists and turns in the road called life, but the happiness in your soul alone truly uplifts and carries you through the lowest valleys and celebrates the highest mountains.  I hope you had as much as a wonderful summer as I did.

Happy Labor Day!

Autumn

As I traveled from New York this week, I noticed the changing of leaves.  It’s coming upon my favorite time of the year, and who better describes it than Emily Dickinson; in her own words.

Have a great week!

Autumn

The morns are meeker than they were,
The nuts are getting brown;
The berry's cheek is plumper,
The rose is out of town.
The maple wears a gayer scarf,
The field a scarlet gown.
Lest I should be old-fashioned,
I'll put a trinket on.

Vacation…Again

Hi!  As you see, I’m posting earlier in the week than I usually do because tomorrow I’m off to New York for another mini vacation.  I wanted to thank you all for following my blog.  It means more than you ever know!

A Something in a Summer’s Day

Here’s one of my favorite poems written by Emily Dickinson that represents the waning days of summer.  I hope you enjoy this poem as much as I do.

Everyone have a good weekend!

A SOMETHING in a summer’s day,
As slow her flambeaux burn away,
Which solumnizes me.

A something in a summer’s noon,--
An azure depth, a wordless tune,
Transcending ecstasy,

And still within a summer’s night
A something so transporting bright,
I clap my hands to see;

Then veil my too inspecting face,
Lest such a subtle, shimmering grace
Flutter too far forme.

The wizard-fingers never rest,
The purple brook within the breast
Still chafes its narrow bed;

Still rears the East her amber flag,
Guides still the sun along the crag
His caravan of red,

Like flowers that heard the tale of dews,
But never deemed the dripping prize
Awaited their low brows;

Or bees, that thought the summer’s name
Some rumor of delirium
No summer could for them;

Or Artic creature, dimly stirred
By tropic hint, --some travelled bird
Imported to the wood;

Or wind’s bright signal to the ear,
Making that homely and severe,
Contented, known, before

The heaven unexpected came,
To lives that thought their worshipping
A too presumptuous psalm.

Beach

I just returned from the beach and had a wonderful time.  Thanks to my friends, I had a beautiful week.  I'll reiterate a philosophy of mine...that summer rocks!

I hope your week was as perfect.

Dreams

Today, I’m posting one of my favorite quotes by a Kennedy.  Even though an assassin cut his life short over forty years ago, Robert Kennedy's words are relevant even more so now.  For me, at least, the quote encourages us to follow our dreams, and change our ways to accomplish those dreams.  Most importantly, though, it reminds us to live with the hope there are better days ahead.  That’s the key to life’s happiness.

“There are those who look at things the way they are, and ask why...I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?”

Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968); 64th US Attorney General

So ask why, and who knows?  Dream big and just maybe you’ll achieve the impossible!

Everyone have a great weekend!

Ye of Little Faith

As I perused the internet this morning, and this quote especially spoke to me.  Circumstances that happened to me this we prove this quote is true.  If we only have a seed of faith, it will certainly grow into a large, willowing tree.  I hope this uplifts you as much as it did me.

“He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.
 Matthew 17:19

Have a marvelous weekend, everyone!

Commencement Speech

As you already may know, I love the Kennedys.  Last night, I listened to “Just Who Will You Be” by Maria Shriver and was truly inspired.  Today, I found that speech and wanted to share it with you.  It’s pretty awesome!  Hope you enjoy.

Going Out

Going out today, so I hope you’ll forgive the short post.  Everyone have a fabulous weekend, and I’ll catch up with you later!

All Things Are Possible

And having thus chosen our course, without guile, and with pure purpose, let us renew our trust in God, and go forward without fear, and with manly hearts.
--July 4, 1861 Message to Congress

I saw this quote and it applied perfectly to my mood today.  I’ve loved President Lincoln ever since I was a little tike, and this quote only strengthens my admiration of him.  To me, though, it transcends the man himself.  This is a gentle reminder, to me, at least, that if we trust in Him, all things are possible!

Have a good weekend, all!

Let's say I’m under the weather today.  I guess I’m human!  So forgive me.  I’ll make up for it next week!

Post-Graduation

What a week!  I’m still in awe of last Saturday’s events.  The day truly exceeded my wildest expectations and I’m on cloud nine!  Suffice it to say that May 17,2014 will live in my memory as long as I breathe.  As I made my way across that stage in the midst of a standing ovation, I felt the warmth of the love of those who have passed before me and knew they were with me on this momentous day.

Thank you to all who made this day possible.  For this, I am truly grateful!

A Poem for Hope

I saw this poem and thought it was a good one to post for the week.  As always, but especially at this time of year, I want to thank you for your support.  It is a time to reflect and prepare myself for the final push of the semester, and as all of you know, this is my last!  Your readership means the world to me, so thank you for investing your time and effort in this.  It means so much!  And now for the poem!

An Inspirational Thought,
Motivational Thought Poem for Hope

by Catherine Pulsifer

As long as we have hope, we have direction,
the energy to move, and the map to move by.
We have a hundred alternatives, a thousand paths and infinity of dreams.
Hopeful, we are halfway to where we want to go; Hopeless, we are lost forever.

Hope is the anticipation of an event or an occurrence.
Our own individual hopes are our own desires,
or could be considered our wish for the future.
Hope can give us a feeling of optimism when we are feeling discouraged.
As Diogenes once said, "Hope is the dream of a waking man."
Hope is one of the prime differences between successful people and those who can only see failure.

Successful people have hope because they can clearly see their goals.
People who only see failure have no hope because they see no light,
they set no goals, and they see nothing accomplished.
Successful people see alternatives and are willing to try different ways.
People who only see failure are unable to see another way and give up to easily.
With hope you are halfway to where you want to go; by setting your goals, and taking the action to achieve them,
you will see your hope turn into your reality!

A Book

I thought I share this little poem written by Emily Dickinson entitled A Book.  I thank all of your support as I go into these last few of college.  It really bolsters my morale!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

A Book

There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands await
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry—
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll—
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears the Human Soul—

Teddy

I just read the article and viewed this short film created by parents who have two children; one has Cerebral Palsy and the other does not.  I was captivated, not only by the siblings love for one another, by her ultimate acceptance of him, and it made me tear up.  I hope you as inspired as I am every time I see this.

Josh Blue

Hi All,

Today, I'm posting a clip of one of my favorite comics, Josh Blue, who has CP also.  If you haven't heard of him, there's a myriad of his videos on YouTube.  I just chose a cleaner, rated-G clip, which is hard to accomplish, I might add :)  At any rate, hope you enjoy!

Dreams

I came upon this poem by Langston Hughes and thought it relevant to my current mindset.  Coincidently, he is also one of my favorite poets.

I hope you all enjoy this and have a fabulous weekend!

Dreams

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Langston Hughes
